Montreal puts an outdoor surface through dozens of freeze-thaw cycles a year. Water gets in, freezes, expands, then melts. A single poured surface has to absorb that movement in its own mass, which eventually cracks it. Interlocking pavers are thousands of separate pieces divided by flexible joints, so the surface moves with the cycle instead of fighting it.

Why the base decides everything

That flexibility only works if water can leave. A properly compacted, well-drained granular base holds no standing water under the pavers, so there is nothing significant left to freeze. A thin base over water-holding clay soil, by contrast, will lift the surface every winter no matter how good the stones on top are.

De-icing salt

Rock salt is hard on concrete, and pavers are a concrete product. It will not attack the structure of the driveway, but over the years it can mark the face of the stones, especially paler ones.

The simplest approach is to clear snow early rather than salt heavily: less ice forms, so less product is needed. Sand does not melt ice, but it gives grip with no chemical effect.

Shovels, blowers and plows

A properly laid paver surface clears like any other. A plastic-bladed shovel avoids scratching the stone, and a snow blower is no problem on a level surface. The one thing to watch is a scraping metal blade: on a textured or heavily profiled paver it can catch.

What spring reveals

The melt is when the truth of an installation shows. A well-built driveway comes out flat, with joints still full. A poorly prepared one comes out with dips, shifted stones and water standing in the same places every year. Those signs are not fixed at the surface; they come from the base.

Getting the surface ready for winter

Autumn is the best time to check a paver surface. Full joints before the first frosts limit water infiltration, and a surface clear of leaves and debris dries faster between thaws.

It is also worth noting where water collects during autumn rain. Those low spots are exactly the ones that become ice patches in January and, often, dips by spring.
